Lake Manyara National Park

The place About this destination

Six habitats in 325 square kilometres

Lake Manyara is the smallest of the main Northern Circuit parks — about 325 square kilometres against the Serengeti’s 14,750 — but what it lacks in scale it makes up for in the sheer density of habitat packed into a short drive. A 600-metre wall of the Rift Valley escarpment forms the park’s entire western boundary, and in the space between that wall and the lake you pass through groundwater forest, open floodplain, acacia woodland and the alkaline lake itself, each with its own distinct wildlife. Hemingway called Manyara “the loveliest lake in Africa,” and from certain points on the entrance road, with the Rift wall rising sheer above green forest and pink shoreline below, it is not hard to see why.

The tree-climbing lions

Manyara is one of only a handful of places in Africa where lions regularly climb trees and rest draped over branches, sometimes four metres off the ground, in the middle of the day. No one has fully explained the behaviour — theories range from escaping biting flies to avoiding the heat of the ground — and it is rare enough elsewhere that Manyara’s prides have become the park’s signature sighting. They are not guaranteed on any single visit, but this is the most reliable place in Tanzania to try.

Flamingos on the pink lake

Flamingos, elephant and the groundwater forest

The lake itself covers roughly two-thirds of the park’s area in the wet season and, when conditions are right, its alkaline shallows turn pink with tens of thousands of lesser flamingos feeding on algae — numbers that shift from year to year with water levels, so no two visits look quite the same. At the park entrance, a dense groundwater forest fed by springs off the escarpment supports large troops of baboon, blue monkey and some of the biggest elephant herds on the Northern Circuit moving quietly between the shade and the open floodplain beyond. More than 400 bird species have been recorded here, making Manyara one of the strongest birding parks in northern Tanzania alongside the sheer scale of its mammal sightings.

A half-day park that punches above its size

Because Manyara is compact, most itineraries treat it as a half-day stop rather than an overnight destination in its own right — typically on the drive between Tarangire and Ngorongoro, entering through Mto wa Mbu at the park gate. Our 5-Day Northern Circuit Classic and 8-Day Full Northern Circuit both build a Manyara afternoon in for exactly this reason: it is the quiet, green counterpoint between the baobab plains of Tarangire and the crowded grandeur of the crater.

Where it is

  • Best time to visit June to October (game) and November to April (birds)
  • Climate Humid for a Rift Valley park, thanks to the groundwater forest — mornings can be misty at the forest edge.
