Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire, about two hours. Tarangire is baobab country — huge, strange, ancient trees standing over open ground, some of them well over a thousand years old. In the dry months it carries one of the highest elephant densities in Africa, because the Tarangire River is the only permanent water for a long way and everything comes to it. Herds of several hundred are common between July and October.
Afternoon game drive, overnight near the park.
Day 2: Transfer to the Ngorongoro highlands, climbing through Karatu’s farmland to the crater rim. Afternoon at leisure — the rim is cool, often misty, and the view down into the caldera is the point of the day. Overnight on the rim.
Day 3: Crater descent at first light. The floor is 260 square kilometres held inside walls 600 metres high, and it carries roughly 25,000 large animals. What you see in a morning here would take days elsewhere: lion prides, old elephant bulls with heavy ivory, buffalo, hippo at Ngoitokitok, flamingo on Lake Magadi when the water suits, and — usually at distance, across the open — black rhino, of which fewer than a hundred remain in the whole conservation area.
Picnic lunch on the floor, ascend in the afternoon, and transfer down to Lake Manyara or Karatu for the night.
Day 4: Lake Manyara in the morning. Groundwater forest at the gate, fed by springs off the Rift escarpment, with blue monkey and big baboon troops. Then open floodplain and the alkaline lake with its birdlife. Manyara’s tree-climbing lions are real but irregular — we will not promise them.
Return to Arusha by late afternoon.
Who this is for: travellers with four days who want the crater without the long Serengeti drive. You get three genuinely different parks and the single best day of wildlife viewing in Tanzania, and you are never more than half a day from Arusha.
What you are giving up: the Serengeti, and with it the migration. If seeing the herds matters to you, this is not the trip — take the five-day or longer. We would rather tell you now.
