Traveller's  Advice

YOUR TRAVEL QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Is tipping expected?

Tipping is a common practice in Tanzania as a way of showing your appreciation of a job well done. It's at your discretion to tip our driver/guides for the exceptional service we are confident they will provide, whether you tip or not. As a guideline however, we suggest you consider giving your guide $15 per client a day. This could also apply to guides that take you on our cultural experiences. Regardless of the level of tipping you choose to give our guides, they get great satisfaction simply from your enjoyment in experiencing our country. Please be advised, though, that any gratuity should ONLY be presented after the safari is finished.

What vaccinations are necessary?

The Centre for Disease Control and The World Health Organisation advise that vaccines against Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and typhoid should be considered for Tanzania and Zanzibar in addition to routine vaccinations like MMR and TDP. Depending on travellers’ activities, immunizations against rabies and yellow fever can also be considered.  Proof of yellow fever vaccination is also required,  but only for travellers arriving from Yellow Fever-endemic countries. This condition also applies to travellers subjected to long flight connections in Yellow Fever-endemic countries for twelve hours (12hrs) or more. As of January 2023, Tanzania is no longer subject to COVID-19 limitations, and vaccines or PCR tests are no longer needed for entry.  Visitors are advised to take anti-malaria tablets and make use of mosquito nets and insect sprays where provided. As with all international travel, it is important to obtain comprehensive travel insurance that would cover medical expenses, among other things, and seek medical advice from your doctor before visiting Tanzania. Most national governments offer useful health advice for travel.

Passports and Visa Requirements?

All visitors to Tanzania require a return or onward ticket and a valid passport with a tourist visa. Your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and at least one blank page. Visas can usually be bought on arrival but the easiest and most convenient method is to purchase them in advance online https://visa.immigration.go.tz/

THIS WILL SAVE A LOT OF TIME ON ARRIVAL.

Paying for things?

The Tanzanian Shilling is our official currency. Visitors can bring with them any amount of foreign currency up to the equivalent of USD 10,000 but amounts above this have to be declared on arrival or departure. Foreign currency may be exchanged at commercial banks, authorised dealers, or at bureaux de change operating in international airports and major towns.

Visa and MasterCard are accepted in most hotels and lodges, and in tourist areas. American Express is not widely accepted even by major hotels. Cash can be withdrawn from ATMs in major towns using Visa and MasterCard.

Luggage

Safari vehicles and small aircraft provide limited space for luggage. It’s best to travel with light soft-sided bags since bulky suitcases will overload and might not be taken on board.

 Climate through the year

Situated just south of the Equator, Tanzania enjoys a tropical climate, mostly warm throughout the year. In the northern highlands around Arusha, Ngorongoro, and Mt Kilimanjaro, the climate is temperate and cooler between June and September, warmest period being between October and February. Although climate change is bringing sometimes unusual weather patterns, there are usually short rains from November to January and longer rains between March and May,  making the bush green and lush and helping to maintain the wildlife and big game for which Tanzania is justly world-famous.

What shall we bring to wear?

Light tropical clothes, especially cotton shorts, shirts and skirts are most suitable. When on safari you are advised to wear quiet colours so as not to distract the wild animals. Khaki and similar shades are ideal.  Some warm clothing is needed in the higher altitude areas around, Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, Arusha – especially in the evening and early morning. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended on safari and guests are advised to carry insect repellents and sunscreens. In Zanzibar, visitors should dress modestly; swim suits, and other revealing clothing should not be worn outside hotels, beaches and resorts.

Electricity?

UK standard power three pin connections everywhere.

215 – 230 Volts, 50 Cycles AC
